Early settlers needed a wide-range of skills to make their homes in the Ottawa region. Many of these trades are no longer common knowledge but we’re giving them our best shot in this hands-on children’s program. Each program date will explore a different theme.

July 13 – Carpentry
How did carpenters help build the house that’s still standing at Pinhey’s Point? What tools would they have used? Make your own wooden boat to take home.

July 20 – Weaving
Discover traditional methods for dyeing cloth, how rag rugs were made on looms, and make your very own miniature rag rug using felt.

August 3 – Pottery
Examine archeological finds and pottery shards to learn how pottery was made and decorated. Visit the kitchen to discover how food-safe pottery was baked. Create your own pot from clay.

August 17 – Magic Lantern
Toys have always been a part of daily life. Are there similarities between how kids played in the past and how we have fun now? See the museum’s ‘Magic Lantern’ and build your own version of this toy projector and slides.

August 31 – Printing
The invention of the printing press had a significant impact on society. What tools were used in printing? Try your own hand at a traditional printing method.
