Heritage Ottawa is hosting a free exhibition of designs for an addition to the Château Laurier Hotel created by students at Carleton University’s Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism.
Working under the supervision of Prof. Marianna Esponda, the students were tasked with envisioning an addition to the Château Laurier that would have a “dialogue” with the historic and iconic hotel.
The remarkable array of drawings, models and plans that resulted will be on display at the Hintonburg Community Centre on December 8 & 9 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.
The exhibition was organized by Heritage Ottawa board member Peter Coffman, who is also Supervisor of Carleton University’s History and Theory of Architecture program. “It’s obvious that the public really cares about this building,” he says. “I think Ottawan’s will be amazed by what they see.”
Currently, city staff are working with the hotel owner and its architect on a revision to the proposed design of the addition submitted last June. The revised design must demonstrate adherence to a Council-approved directive to make the addition more “visually compatible with the existing Château Laurier.”
The exhibition is free and open to the public. Come and view the designs and have the chance to meet students who created them.
