On August 28, 1971, less than two years after homosexuality was decriminalized in Canada, a small group of activists demonstrated in the rain on Parliament Hill for recognition of the rights of gay communities. In the roughly 50 years that followed, most of the demands voiced that day have been realized, but the path to get us there was not always an easy one. This tour will cover some of the places, people and events that helped shaped Ottawa’s LGBTQ community and its history.
GUIDE: Glenn Crawford, research and project leader of The Village Legacy Project.
